In this essay the political poems of the epigrammatist Alcaeus of Messene are examined, with special emphasis on the poet's attitude toward Philip V of Macedonia. A contemporary of Philip, Alcaeus flourished around 200 B.C., and some of his epigrams were collected in the Greek Anthology. For Alcaeus' life, the evidence is scarce. His political epigrams testify to his passionate involvement in the politics of his time. Four of his epigrams attack Philip, but apparently at the beginning of his career, the poet was one of the king's supporters. His break with Philip occurred later on. Alcaeus wrote at least fifteen epigrams, but probably he should be considered the author of all twenty-two epigrams in the Anthology attributed to a poet with this name. He probably also wrote iambic poems, now lost, and perhaps a work entitled Comparisons. It is likely that Alcaeus was influenced by. the Cynic Cercidas, both in poetic technique and perhaps in outlook as well.
