Η μετανάστευση είναι στενά συνδεδεμένη με τον τρόπο ανάπτυξης του καπιταλισμού και φαίνεται να παρουσιάζει ιδιαίτερα χαρακτηριστικάστην εποχή της «παγκοσμιοποίησης». Την τελευταία δεκαετία (2000-2010) πολλοί μεξικανοί μετακινήθηκαν προς τα μεγάλα αστικά κέντρατων ΗΠΑ, κυρίως σε περιοχές που θεωρήθηκαν ως «νέα υπερ-γκέτο» με ιδιαίτερα κοινωνικοοικονομικά και πολιτισμικά χαρακτηριστικά. Σεορισμένες από αυτές τις γειτονιές, στην περιοχή του Ανατολικού Χάρλεμ στη Νέα Υόρκη, οι μετανάστες αντιστέκονται στην διαδικασία επέ-κτασης του gentrification («αστικού εξευγενισμού») και γίνονται ο πυρήνας του «κινήματος για τη δικαιοσύνη στη γειτονιά» («movimiento porla justicia del barrio»). Αυτό το κίνημα συνδέει τον αγώνα του με τον αγώνα των λαών του Μεξικού και ανταποκρίνεται στο κάλεσμα «της άλληςκαμπάνιας» των ζαπατίστας (EZLN) για ένα πολύμορφο «αριστερά και από τα κάτω» κίνημα που θα ενώνει τις εξεγερμένες αξιοπρέπειες. Τοάρθρο διερευνά το ιστορικό και γεωγραφικό πλαίσιο όπου αναπτύχθηκε το «κίνημα για τη δικαιοσύνη στη γειτονιά». Επιχειρεί μια σύνθετηανάλυση του θέματος. Καταλήγει στη διαπίστωση ότι το κίνημα αυτό είναι ένα σύγχρονο κοινωνικό κίνημα πόλης με τοπικο-παγκόσμια χαρακτηριστικά.
