Abstract:
The aim of the article is to discuss the prospect of European Monetary Union with recours to the Monetary Heterodoxy and especially to the work of Karl Polanyi and of the recent French Intersubjectivist School. The First part of the article enounces what are the foundations of Intersubjective Economics and their implications for Monetary Analysis : money is not a neutral instrument of measurement but also a social convention which social acceptance is crucial to canalize violence in the economy an to allow a good functionning of it. The status of the European Currency Unit is then duscussed. The social and nationalist reticences to Monetary Union are taken into account. And finally the article considers that the Maastricht choice of a gradualist convergence is the worst one; and the end of the article evoks several alternatives to achieve a socially accepted Monetary Union in Europe.
