In the as above entitled article -which is a part of a more extensive work on the History of the Bank by the writer- the writer explores the evolution of the Bank proving its basic role for economic growth. The article also includes matters concerning currency in different times and peoples. The first Part of the present paper concerns money and credit, from the era of the first civilizations of the Near East until the decay of the Roman Empire. The second Part concerns money and credit in the Hellenic Byzantine Empire until the rise of the Italian maritime cities. At this point the writer examines the causes, internal and external of the division of the Mediterranean. In the same part the author Byzantine explores currency during Middle Ages and after describes the role of the Bank during the period of merchant capitalism.
