Abstract:
The following paper is a historical overview of the greek cement industry during the 20th century. The first cement plant started its operation in 1902. Since then and up until the first oil crisis, in 1974, the domestic consumption followed a general upward trend. During this period, the growth of the industry and its contribution to the development of the country were significant. At the end of the 1970s and in the early 1980s the greek cement industry became the largest world exporter of cement. In the last two decades, however, the cement market has experienced significant changes and a competitive confrontation between local and global approaches to the markets. Due to these changes, the greek cement industry missed its national character, which sustained for about 100 years, and the greek firms became parts of multinational and financial groups.
