Abstract:
The present study focuses on the effects of tourist development on Hersonisos, an area on the island of Crete. More specifically, it deals with changes in the lives and attitudes of local inhabitants after presenting background information on infrastructure, the economy and production volumes of the main commodities grown in the area. The findings reveal the depth of the influence on local lifestyle and behaviour caused by the unprecedented growth of the tourist industry and confirm the need for a return to the traditional values that defined human interaction in the area without losing sight of the benefits on offer from tourist development.
