Abstract:
The aim of this article is to explore alternative scenarios on the organisation and governance of the metropolitan region of the capital of Greece, Athens. Initially, the concept of the metropolis and the process of metropolitan transformation are analysed and international experience on administrative organisation of metropolitan centres is examined. Based on the above, after a brief description of the basic development characteristics and problems of Athens, and in accordance with the existing administrative framework in Greece, four alternative scenarios of governance of the metropolitan region are determined. These scenarios range from the most lax governance form, in the context of inter-municipal cooperation, to the formation of a metropolitan local government.
