Earlier drafts of a closely related paper were presented at the conference on "Culture and Philosophy as Ways of Life in Times of Global Change" and at the meeting of Greek and Finnish philosophers at the Finnish Institute at Athens on October 9, 2013. I would like to thank the participants in these events for their questions and comments, particularly, Father John Panteleimon Manoussakis and Professors Katerina Ierodiakonou, Vasso Kindi and William Sweet, and to Tasos Karakatsanis and Anna Vassilaki for their help in the corrections of the final draft. I am also grateful to Professor Philip Kitcher for access to the text of his Terry Foundation lectures before they were published and for his responses to my remarks and queries. My analysis draws extensively on Kitcher's assessment of the prospects of secular humanism and of its spiritual dimension. Last but not least, I am indebted to Nicos Mouzelis for discussions on the issue of spirituality, which he explores in his Modernity and Religiosity [-in Greek, Νε-ωτερικότητα και θρησκευτικότητα, Πόλις: Αθήνα, 2014
