Abstract:
Τhe rediscovery of an important, yet hardly studied letter raises a series ofquestions, which are examined in this article. The letter was written in Geneva in April 1823 by Greece’s future Governor, John Kapodistrias, and itwas addressed to Metropolitan Ignatius at Pisa. It constitutes a testimony ofKapodistrias’ proposition to compose a History of Modern Greece. It revealsthe future Governor’s ideas and perceptions about this issue, as well as hisintention to merge his own history-project to the one presented to him by thePhanariot intellectual Jacovacy Rizos-Neroulos. Indeed, five years later, thelatter would publish a book in French entitled Histoire Moderne de la Grècedepuis la chute de l’Empire d’Orient. It was actually the first book concerning Greece’s modern history to be written by a Greek. Yet, the book containsno reference to Kapodistrias’ name. A thorough comparison between Neroulos’book and Kapodistrias’ letter reveals, however, the straight collaboration ofthe two. The article proceeds by examining the distinct elements presented inKapodistrias’ and Neroulos’ historical thought and national ideology, by comparing both the book and the letter to other historical accounts of the period. The comparison is made, particularly, with the Coup d’æil sur la Turquie ofAlexander Maurocordatos and the Mémoire sur l’état actuel de la civilisationdans la Grèce of Adamantios Koraes.
