Abstract:
The “travelling-bazaar” model, which according to Braudel was the dominantform of private shipping business in the Mediterranean during the second halfof the sixteenth century, was what prompted us to examine comparable cases inthe eastern part of the Mediterranean. To this end, we turned to the example ofCorfu in the first half of the sixteenth century, a characteristic Mediterraneanisland without autarky in foodstuffs and with close relations with the sea. Theanalysis of the terms of operation of Corfiot corporate maritime trade, half acentury before Braudel’s model, on the one hand points out the analogies inthe function of various Mediterranean forms of shipping entrepreneurship andon the other hand reinforces the view of the continuity of the late medievalshipping enterprises.
