Abstract:
This paper presents the results of the recent archaeological research which took place in 2008 at the east defensive wall of the Lower Town of Monemvasia, close to the gate. Part of the urban planning, a ruined church of the Late Byzantine period organically linked to an adjacent semi-underground cistern, the outlines of buildings preserved at their foundation level, as well as stone-paved streets were discovered. It was revealed that part of the church and the cistern have been incorporated into the foundation of the wall, which was constructed in the middle of the 17th century according to the written sources.
