Abstract:
The icon of the Crucifixion in the Varna Museum originates from α church at Banja, Mesemvria. The iconography of the composition, the typology and the physiognomy of the figures, as well as the high quality of its painting place this icon among the Palaiologan masterpieces of the second half of the fourteenth century and make possible its association with Constantinople. Specifically, the icon can be dated between 1367 and 1396, the period when this maritime region was under the influence of Constantinople, since it was part of the Byzantine Empire.
