Evidence on the Building History of the Holy Monastery of the Great Lavra on Mount Athos : The Gateway in the Circuit Wall

Presented is the complex of the fortified entrance to the precinct of the Great Lavra monastery on Mount Athos. The initial phase coincides with the founding of the monastery and the constructing of the fortress (10th c.). The complex was completed subsequently with the addition of the ‘Tzimiskes’ tower (11th c.) and the Koimesis tower (16th c.), the completion of the wall (1608), the construction of the outwork (pre-1772), the construction of the vaulted gateway (1861) and the arrangement of the entrance passage (diabatikon) (1887).
