Abstract:
The icon shows the full-length Virgin and Child flanked by two venerating saints, St George and St Roch the protector against cholera of the Western Church. A good product of a Cretan workshop, the icon is dated on the basis of stylistic features to the late sixteenth century. The iconographic scheme, of the icon which recalls that of the Deesis, is discussed and the iconographic types of the Virgin and the venerating saints, with particular emphasis to the representation of St Roch, The icon seems to have been brought by Cretan refugees to Monemvasia where, sometime later–possibly in the second half of the eighteenth century–the figure of St Roch was clumsily obscured and transformed into that of St Peter. A dedicatory inscription records the name of Petros Kallonas, presumably responsible for this over-painting, which was removed during the recent conservation of the work.
