Abstract:
Several hundred Christian coins dating from the monetary reform of Anastasios I (498) to the Ottoman conquest of Rhodes (1522) have been recovered from excavations in the island. Most are of copper and form a representative sample of the small currency in circulation over the period. Notable features are the comparatively high numbers of folles of Herakleios Class 2 and Constans II Class 2bis; the high frequency of eleventh-century Class B anonymous folles with a characteristic pattern of wear; the commonest post-reform coins of Alexios I Komnenos are tetartera of the imp. bust / jewelled cross type.
