Abstract:
Six unpublished documents from the registers of the Greek Confraternity of Venice, now preserved in the Old Archive of the Hellenic Institute are published and commented upon in this paper. They concern the figures of four saints (the Three Hierarchs and St Athanasios), painted on wood by the Cretan Michael Damaskinos between 1577 and 1579 in the sanctuary of the Greek Orthodox church of St. George. These documents reveal the procedure of commissioning and executing the above figures and offer details concerning materials and expenses as well as the painter’s remuneration, 32 ducats all inclusive. The work was over painted in 1853 by the Italian artist Sebastiano Santi.
