Abstract:
Represented on a late-fifteenth - early sixteenth-century icon of unknown provenance, in the Serres Ecclesiastical Museum, are the Virgin Hodegetria and St John the Theologian standing and holding a codex with the opening words of his Gospel. The iconographic combination of the Theotokos and St John the Theologian, which is possibly unique, is linked with the Crucifixion and symbolizes the Incarnation of the Word of God and the salvation of the human race through the Mother of God. The circulation and dissemination of the message of salvation owes much to the work of the Evangelist John.
