Abstract:
The plate discussed in this article was found during arescue excavation on a building site in Palaia Phokaia,Anavyssos. The plate is of north African origin with a redorange glaze, Hayes type 104A in form, with type Eiidecoration consisting of a stamped image of Christ standing on a basilisk. This find is primarily of interest because ofits iconographie subject, which is rarely found on stampedplates, in contrast with oil lamps of the same provenanceand produced with the same technique. On the other hand, the recovery of an imported north African plate in a farmhouse in the countryside of Attica indicates that thechristianized inhabitants of the area were prosperous, afact which, moreover, is confirmed by the rest of the findsin the excavation.
