Abstract:
Important historical evidence for the events of 1902 in Eastern Macedonia (particularly Prosotsani near Drama) and on the island of Thasos is provided by three letters by John Constantinidis, the Cretan poet and protagonist in the Macedonian Struggle, who lived at that time in Kavala. They were addressed to Stephen Dragoumis, who at that time showed a strong interest, and was actively involved, in the Macedonian question, which is why Constantinidis kept him informed of developments, while also setting out his own concerns and reservations. These letters, which come from the Historical Archive of the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs and are here published in their original form, show in a direct and vivid way the diverse nature of the struggle being waged by the Greeks in these areas, partly against their overlords for more humane living conditions, and partly against the consequences of the recently- arisen question of the Bulgarian Exarchate.
