Abstract:
The yearbooks «Salname» in the Ottoman Empire were published by the central administration, the various ministries, the vilâyets and private sectors. The yearbooks of the vilâyets are of great importance, because they contain rich material concerning the history, administration, population, public buildings, the financial life etc. of the vilâyets of the Empire. For the vilâyet of Monastiri were published nine yearbooks, the first in 1292 hegira (1875) and the last in 1314 (1896). In the later part of the last century, the vilâyet of interest to us, bordered in the north with a small part of the vilâyets of Kosovo and Skodra, in the east with the vilâyets of Kosovo and Thessaloniki, in the south with the vilâyets of Thessaloniki and Greece, in the west with the vilâyets of Ioannina and Skodra. The vilâyet of Monastiri contained five sancaks, those of: Monastiri, Servia, Korytsa, Devres and Elvasan. In the yearbook of the year 1308 hegira (1891) the population of the vilâyet was 838, 384. The inhabitants were distinguished in «Moslems» Wallachs, Greeks [Pour], Armenians, Bulgarians, Jews, «Protestants» and «Latins». As in the case in the yearbooks of the vilâyet of Kosovo and Thessaloniki, also in the yearbooks of the vilâyet of Monastiri the ethnological synthesis of the islamic population is not determined, and as a result we do not know the analogy in numbers between the Albanians and the Turks. This is the reason why it is a faulty estimation whenever the Moslems appear to outnumber any other nationality in all the kazas of the vilâyet, except those of Fiorina and Kastoria, because the comparison is not between the Moslems and the Christians, but between the Albanians together with the Turks on one side and the Greeks and Bulgarians on the other. The Wallachs and the Greeks together outnumbered the Bulgarians in the kazas of Fiorina and Korytsa, while the Bulgarians prevail in the kazas of Monastiri, Perlepe, Achris, Kirtsovo and Kastoria [Salname 1305 hegira (1888), p. 390]. No «Macedonian nation» is mentioned in the nine yearbooks of the vilâyet of Monastiri.
