Abstract:
The author of this article presents the settlements of Western Macedonia and the names of their dedicators, as they are listed in the prothesis 215 of the Varlaam monastery of Meteora. The contents of this manuscript cover the period from the 17th to the 19th C (1614-1876).The dedicators originate from 84 West Macedonian settlements and from the Zamborda monastery (Osios Nikanoras) and they amount to 1,184. 1,111 of them are laymen (607 men and 504 women) and the remaining 73 are monks (31 monks and 42 nuns), while one name is illegible. From the 84 settlements 9 do not exist and 13 we could not identify. From the study of the dedicators’ Christian names it appears that male names are predominantly ifluenced by the ecclesiastical tradition while in the fe male ones by the laical tradition. Several names derive from family names of well known families of the medieval Hellenism (Byzantine period), a fact which shows the firm continuity of the Greek tradition in the West Macedonian area as well as the Hellenism of the Wallachian speaking inhabitants of some settlements, in which we also find those names.
