The iconographic cycle of Agia Aikaterini in the medieval city of Rhodes

An iconographie cycle of Ag. Aikaterini is preserved in the south aisle of the church in the medieval city of Rhodes known as Ilk Michrab. There are eight scenes in all, around the central figure of Ag. Aikaterini, who is standing and supplicating, depicted as a martyr: the dialogue of Aikaterini with the emperor, Aikaterini refusing to sacrifice to the idols, the contest with the rhetoricians, the torture of the wheels, the beheading, the torture with the whips, the saint in prison, the torture by scraping. It is so far the only known example in Greece of this saint’s cycle. Rhodes was a revictualling stopping place on the voyage by pilgrims to the monastery of Ag. Aikaterini at Mt Sina. Ag. Aikaterini was the patron saint of the Italian Knights, and chapels dedicated to her are found in the homonymous Hospice and in the Grand Master’s Palace, within the walls of the city. The Knights’ rule on Rhodes undoubtedly influenced both the iconography and the style of the cycle. Iconographie comparisons, chiefly, and a stylistic affinity with the “eclectic trend” in painting on Rhodes as well as with the Ag. Georgios cycles, date this cycle of Ag. Aikaterini to the 2nd half of the 15th century.

Ο αρθρογράφος ευχαριστεί την 4η Εφορεία Βυζαντινών Αρχαιοτήτων Δωδεκανήσου για την παραχώρηση της άδειας μελέτης και δημοσίευσης του μνημείου, τον προϊστάμενο της Εφορείας Ηλία Κάλλια για τις πολύτιμες συζητήσεις που είχε μαζί του και τη συνάδελφο Αγγελική Κατσιώτη για τη βοήθειά της. Η πρώτη μορφή της μελέτης αυτής παρουσιάστηκε στο Ε' Πολιτιστικό Συμπόσιο Δωδεκανήσου στη Νίσυρο, τον Αύγουστο του 1987. Η αποτύπωση έγινε από τους σχεδιαστές της 4ης Εφορείας Μιχάλη Σάνδαλο και Γιούλη Κούρτη και η φωτογράφηση από τον Νίκο Κασέρη., Περιέχει 1 σχέδιο.
