A group of graves excavated at Argos

During excavations, in October 1981, at Argos, a group of four cist graves were found in a distance of 240 m. to the east of the hill of Aspis.The graves I and II were built of unworked stones and covered by slabs.The grave I, according to its construction and some sherds of a small matt painted jug belongs to the Middle Helladic period.The grave II, according to its construction and its dimension probably belongs to the Early Mycenaean period.The graves III and IV were cict graves of poros, belonging to the transition from the Late Archaic to the Early Classical period. Such graves of the same period occur at Corinth, Asini, Argos and at Halieis in the southern Argolid.The graves III and IV differed from each other in their contents, but the choice of pottery, reveals that Corinthian pots were prefered to Attic and to local ones. The local pottery, from eastern Peloponnesos, has not yet been, so thoroughly, studied that it is possible to give more detailed information about the different pottery centres which, no doubt, existed at that time.The graves III and IV contained, exept Attic, Corinthian and local pottery, two Laconian cups and one Beotian. They also held other offerings becides pottery, an Argive terracota figurine with two female figures, two metal rings of bronze and iron, one silver finger-ring and reinforcements for sandals made of iron. Examples made of iron are mentioned in the article from various places in Greece. The majority of the sandals can be dated from the 6th and the 5th c. B.C.
