Excavation of graves at Eretria

Abstract:
A rescue excavation conducted in 1980 by the Ephoria of Antiquities of Euboea at Eretria, in a building lot outside the ancient city wall, uncovered a 5th c. B.C. cemetery with, chiefly, chytra burials (19), tile burials (3), clay larnakes (3), and 1 cremation. The peculiar nature of the ground on the shore of Eretria with its mixture of sand and sea salts has formed an almost impenetrable stratum that made excavating difficult. The grave goods, chieftly lekythoi, were sparse and of poor quality, of the kind mass-produced in Attic workshops and destined for the cities belonging to the Athenian League. Most of the lekythoi belong to the Cock Group and the Megaira workshop; 5 aryballoid lekythoi were also found, and 4 of Corinthian type, l lekythos and 1 oinochoe of the Athens 581 Group, 1 white lekythos, 2 feeding-bottles, and fragments of vases attributed to the Athena, Haemon and Phanyllis painters. The nature both of the finds and the graves suggest that it was a children’s cemetery.
