Pottery of the late classical period from Amalias

A rescue excavation undertaken in 1980 by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Olympia at Palouki (locality «Paliomylos»), SW of Amalias, brought to light part of a cemetery with burial-pithioi and tile-covered graves of the first half of the 4th century B.C. The grave furnishings included black-glazed pottery showing an Attic influence, various painted and some undecorated vases, and a group of lekythoi of the «Eleian» type. These finds add to our knowledge on the local character of the pottery of Eleian workshops and reveal the fairly frequent presence of «Eleian» lekythoi, particularly in Eleia. They also shed light on the spreading of this type of pottery to other parts of the NW Peloponnese and the corresponding SW part of mainland Greece including the Ionian Islands.It would be worth noting that Amalias and the whole region around it could, in future, prove important from an historical and archaeological point of view. This would require a further systematic investigation based on archaeological evidence from other burial sites already located but either partly or not at all explored, in combination with a search for remains from other settlements of that period.

Τριάντη, που με ευγένεια της παραχώρησε το δικαίωμα δημοσίευσης του ευρήματος από την Αμαλιάδα, καθώς και για κάθε χρήσιμη συμβουλή της πάνω στο θέμα.Μια σύντομη παρουσίαση του ευρήματος δημοσιεύθηκε από την υπογραφομένη στην Επετηρίδα της Εταιρείας Ηλειακών Μελετών (Τόμος Α', Εν Αθήναις 1982, σ. 489-504). Τα σχέδια των αγγείων για το άρθρο αυτό έγιναν από τον καλλιτέχνη ζωγράφο Στ. Ανδρουτσάκη. Οι φωτογραφίες οφείλονται στις Λ. Μπαρτζιώτη, Ινώ Ιωαννίδου και στον Κ. Κωνσταντόπουλο.Η μελέτη αυτή είχε ήδη κατατεθεί, όταν το καλοκαίρι του 1985, σε τυχαία ανεύρεση ταφικού πίθου στην πόλη της Ανδραβίδας βρέθηκαν δύο ακόμα ωοειδείς λήκυθοι (Π 4036, Π 4037) και μία αρυβαλλόσχημη (Π 4038) "ηλειακού" τύπου, ώστε το Σχέδ. 20 που παραθέτουμε να συμπληρώνεται με μία ακόμη θέση, ενδεικτική για τη διάδοση της κεραμικής στην Ηλεία.
