This paper deals briefly with tonality, the tonal coloration, which is evident as a general phonetic impression to speakers of other languages. It undertakes to determine its nature, based on an examination of its different forms, its systematic modifications, and its description (tonality is something self-evident and given, easy to perceive but difficult to describe). Some hypotheses concerning the study of tonality are made and some problems of interpretation and valuation (cf. the expression 'melodious language', different criteria etc) are touched upon, leading to the conclusion that tonality is an indispensable and independent feature of languages and idiolects, a characteristic which does not result from all other phonetic characteristics of the language, as shown for instance by the tonality of the older bilingual generation of Greek Jews speaking Modern Greek.
