Στο άρθρο αυτό προτείνεται μια τριμερής ανάλυση των “τροπικών” προτάσεων, με βάση το “ τροπικό” βοηθητικό ρήμα, τη λογική πρόταση και τα συμφραζόμενα μέσα στα οποία πρέπει να ερμηνευτεί η τροπικότητα. Έτσι, στην πρόταση You can’t come in because I haven’t finished dressing η λογική πρόταση είναι “You can’t come in”, η τροπικότητα είναι η “δυνατότητα” και το γλωσσικό περιβάλλον είναι “I haven’t finished dressing ”. Το γλωσσικό περιβάλλον δε βρίσκεται βέβαια πάντα ξεκάθαρα στο κείμενο, αλλά όταν βρίσκεται — όπως στο παράδειγμα — μπορεί συνήθως να ερμηνευτεί ως αιτί α για την έκφραση της τροπικότητας ή, στην περίπτωση ερωτήσεων, ως μια “χρήσιμη απάντηση” . Η εργασία δίνει το περίγραμμα ενός “υπολογιστικού μοντέλου” για να απαντά σε “τροπικές” ερωτήσεις που χρησιμοποιεί αυτές τις ιδέες.

Περιέχει σημειώσεις και βιβλιογραφία, Part of the work on this paper took place in the environment of an ESRC supported project on ‘Helpful answers to modal and hypothetical questions’. The aim of the project is to explore the logical and pragmatic basis for providing helpful answers to modal and hypothetical questions and to model this computationally. We will look informally at some of the findings of the project in section 5 below. The author is grateful for discussions with colleagues on the project. He is also grateful to for discussions on modality with Maya MacKinnon, whose Edinburgh PhD I helped to supervise, and whose work influenced the structure of the project referred to above.
