Abstract:
The most famous musician of Crete, during the first half of the 17th century was, without any doubt, Dimitrios Tamias or Damian. He was probably born, between 1585 and 1590, in Chandakas, where his father was a priest at the church of Saint Dimitrios. Marinos Tzanes Bounialis places him among the students of the Rethimnian Venediktos Episkopoulos. On the 8th of June 1610 he was elected as cantor of town. From then on and for about half a century, Dimitrios Damian dominated the society of Chandakas as an important personality of the day, leaving behind a wealth of remarkable work.
