A 4th c. BC red-figure chous in the Brauron Museum

This study presents the fragmentary red-figure oinochoe (Inv. No. 1595), type 3 (chous) which according to the inventory of the Brauron Museum came from a grave in Merenda (ancient Myrrhinous). It depicts a bearded rider wrapped in his himation, a flute-girl, and a nude youth holding a torch. All three figures are facing in the same direction. On the basis of typological and stylistic parallels, the vase dates to the mid-4th c. BC, and may be securely attributed to the Filottrano Painter, who primarily painted bell kraters. Consequently, the Merenda chous is the only example known to date of a small closed vase to be added to this artist’s oeuvre. The scene on the vase, despite an effort to connect it with some scene during the celebration of the Anthesteria, is insufficiently documented, as the figures on the vase are repeated in exactly the same way on the artist’s kraters, where they are interpreted as scenes of revelry and banqueting. In any event, the choi ce of subject is not surprising, since within a more general context similar expressions are entirely suited to the spirit and atmosphere of a celebration, all the more so when it is Dionysus who is being honored.
