This study offers a systematic investigation of four Late Hellenistic cylindrical marble funerary altars from Rhodes and Tilos, which have unusual relief decoration consisting of wreaths with leaf-bearing tendrils from which grow poppy capsules (heads) and ears of corn. The iconographie motif of the corn and poppies growing from the same tendril is thoroughly examined, given that it is especially rare in ancient works of art. The spare rendering of these floral motifs on the marble altars of Rhodes recalls comparable elaborate works of Late Hellenistic sculpture from Pergamon, which had an important influence on the formation of iconographie prototypes for altars from Rhodes and Tilos.The study also investigates other similar or related parallels in pottery (black- and red-figure vase painting), sculpture, the minor arts and numismatics, and images of ears of corn and poppy heads in ancient Greek works are provided in appendices. A discussion is offered concerning the iconographie difficulties connected with the interpretation of these floral motifs as chthonian symbols for Eleusinian worship, chiefly of Demeter and Persephone.In conjunction with the study of the iconography of the ear of corn and the poppy, there is a detailed presentation of the archaeological evidence and literary sources attesting to Eleusinian worship in the Dodecanese, at the sanctuaries of Demeter and Kore on Rhodes, and above all on Cos, as well as on smaller islands of the Dodecanese, including Astypalea, Karpathos, Tilos and Kalymnos.

Εύα Αποστόλου (Νομισματικό Μουσείο), ενώ σημαντική βοήθεια προσέφεραν οι αρχαιολόγοι Ελένη Παπαβασιλείου (4η ΕΒΑ) και Ιωάννα Μπίθα (Κέντρο Έρευνας της Βυζαντινής και Μεταβυζαντινής Τέχνης της Ακαδημίας Αθηνών), καθώς και ο φύλακας αρχαιοτήτων Τήλου Παντελής Γιαννουράκης.
