Skyphoi with relief decoration from the Hellenistic cemetery at Pylos

The majority of the 65 relief skyphoi found intact or in fragments in the Hellenistic cemetery at Yalova near Palaionavarino at Pylos come from funeral pyres, with a smaller number from graves. They have brown-red to orange, brown, or grey fabric with no inclusions, and a brown-red, red or black glaze.They have great similarities with products of the Ionian-Ephesian workshops of Menemakhos, of the Monogram, des Belles Méduses, of Gray Ware, of Heraios, and were probably imported to Pylos from these workshops. On the basis of parallels with them, they may be dated from 160 to the early 1st c. BC.The discovery of them in a Hellenistic cemetery at Pylos attests to the commercial connections between the port of Pylos and the production and trade centres of Ionia. These connections were served by the sea routes, in which Delos was probably a staging post, and they attest to relations between Pylos and the major commercial centres of the period.
