A new stele of those fallen in battle from the demosion sema : preliminary report

An excavation conducted inside two protected buildings, on the occasion of their renovation and-ZAuemodelling as an exhibition centre for the Benaki Museum, revealed part of the fortifications of ancient Athens. More specifically, part of the outwork was uncovered with a defensive addition made at the time of the emperor Valerian, and also the moat, the edge of the moat and part of the path around it.Amongst the marble architectural members found built into the defensive addition of Valerian was found part of a stele of those fallen in battle, from the Demosion Sema. About half the stele survives, with two lists of male proper names inscribed on it. The first list consists of 64 names in two columns, while the second follows below an incised dividing line, after the heading ‘these in the war’.I believe that this stele formed part of a monument dedicated to those who fell in battles fought during the same campaigning year in Euboea, Chios, the depths of Asia Min or, and in the Sicilian expedition of 412 BC. As I try to show in the present article, I believe that the three rectangular marble blocks in the Epigraphic Museum bearing the famous epigram (IG I3, 1163), belong to the same monument, and probably formed the top part of the crépis, on which 5 stelae were erected.The present stele is part of the first of the five stelae amongst which the ten Attic tribes were divided, and contains the names of the dead from Erechtheis, the first of the Athenian tribes according to the official order.An attempt is made to restore the monument on the basis of the preserved sockets and a variety of other evidence and observations.
