Abstract:
In April 1999 the torso of an unfinished Archaic kouros, preserved from the base of the neck to the knees, was handed in to the Paros Museum. The right arm, which would have been bent across the breast, together with the shoulder to the wrist, is missing, as are the genitalia. It has a greatest preserved height of 0.95 m. and the width at the shoulders is 0.39 m. It is the first unfinished kouros found on Paros. The surface of the marble is not particularly badly corroded. Traces can be made out of the various tools used to work the piece, the carving of which is less advanced in some parts of the body and more in others. The entire torso is slender, with harmonious proportions. The working of the anatomical details is quite well advanced and there are traces of polishing in some places. The pose of the right arm, which can be deduced from the hand, which is attached to the left part of the breast, is very rare. The arm was probably bent at almost a right angle at the elbow. Of the hand, which was resting on the area of the heart, all that can be distinguished is the thumb, since the sculptor had not begun work on the other fingers. The soft modelling of the forms, mainly of the lower part of the torso, and the arm bent across the breast, date the kouros to about 530 BC.
