Abstract:
In 1971, deep ploughing in two fields to the south-west of the town of Yiannitsa, and the handing in the authorities of bronze jewellery led to the partial investigation in the following year of an ancient cemetery, which is probably to be associated with the ancient settlement at the south edge of the town of Yiannitsa. The nine tombs investigated contained two male burials (Tomb 7 and 8) and one child burial (Tomb 9). In the case of the other tombs, there is insufficient evidence for any conclusions, as to the sex of the occupants. The deceased were accompanied by metal grave offerings (bronze jewellery, iron weapons and tools), and by clay vases, mainly closed, though more rarely open shapes, made of light red and grey clay. The bronze jewellery known in the bibliography as Macedonian bronzes is richly represented in the Yiannitsa cemetery. It was probably made by the lost wax technique, judging by the remains of clay cores and metal plates. In the absence of impor ted vases, the objects in the cemetery are compared with similar ones from other cemeteries in Macedonia and elsewhere, and are dated to the late 7th-first half of the 6th c. BC, just before the Archaic cemeteries of Macedonia were opened to the markets of south Greece and Ionia.
