The science of Geomythology studies the myths which are related to the Geoenvironment. The labors of Hercules, which take place in the region of ancient “Argos ” and have geomythological interest are the following three (the slaying of the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra, the cleansing of the Aug ean stables and the slaying of the Stymphalian Birds).Hercules is the mythic figure with unusual physical strength. Each feat or achievement, which exceeded the standards and promoted either the safety of the group or the level of group life could be attributed to Hercules, who thus became the most important figure of Greek mythology. It was therefore reasonable to attribute to him great works as the drainage of lakes (the labour of the slaying of Hydra), the diversion of rivers and the construction of dykes (the labour of the cleansing of the Augean stables) as well as the control of diseases such as malaria and typhoid (the labour of slaying of the Stymphalian Birds). The above feats and achievements reveal and highlight the hydraulic, mechanical, geological and building knowledge of the Mycenaeans, which are concentrated and personified in the mythical Argolic hero Hercules, who later gained panhellenic and worldwide fame.
