Among the many works which the great Neo-hellenic poet Kostis Palamas has translated, he has only two translations from the ancient Greek literature to his credit; the II and XIV Olympic odes of Pindar.A plethora of Palamas' references to the work of Pindar reveals his deep love and attachment to this ancient poet. Our personal research in the library of Palamas, led us to a number of books relating to Pindar, with notations and underlined sections made by the poet, which indicate his systematic study of Pindar in the original text.I believe that it is important and interesting to follow how this great Neo-hellenic lyric poet tried to understand and to translate the greatest lyric poet of the antiquity. On the basis of Palamas' views as regards a good translation, the following characteristics are apparent: the translation must be free and not scholastic. However this freedom should not exceed certain conditions, thus, alternating the character of the original text
and paraphrasing its meaning.Although it is very difficult to translate the works of Pindar, Palamas was one of the first who attempted to do so. In view of the difficulties encountered, he succeeded in translating sections of his work, e.g. Ol. II, 7, 10-11, 33-34,45,54, 65, 90, and Ol. XIV, 67,16-17. In general, Palamas' translations of Pindar can be appraised and read even today.
