Abstract:
In this paper the views of Evgenios Voulgaris are examined. Voulgaris was the most prominent representative of Modern Greek Enlightenment, concerning Pyrrhonism and the contrast between Dogmatism and Scepticism. It is proved that Voulgaris rejects Pyrrhonism because the doctrine of the latter leads to a theoritical nihilism. There is also an analysis of his critique of Pyrrhonism over Dogmatism and Scepticism which are two principal theories on the possibility of human knowledge. Voulgaris proves that Dogmatism is an absurd theory, since it maintains that man has an unlimited knowledgical ability, a phrase which cannot be confirmed by reality. He also proves that Scepticism can be the cause for the abolition of philosophy, while he himself prefers "selectivism" (εκλεκτισµό), as it moderates the extremities of these two theories. Finally it is proved that Voulgaris is aware of the conflict between ancients and moderns which dominated Europe in the 17 century . However, he becomes capable of exceeding it so that he doesn't openly support either the one or the other party.
