Abstract:
The purpose of this preliminary study was to examine (a) the demographic profile of the directors of health and fitness clubs of MYSO, (b) the time they dedicated in managerial activities, and (c) the differences among males and females directors in measurement variables. Eighteen directors (100%) of health and fitness clubs of Youth and Sport organization of Athens Municipality took part in the study. Data was collected with structured personal interviews, and a questionnaire was developed. For the analysis, descriptive statistics, two tailed t-tests and X2 was used. Results analysis revealed that more directors were males, who at an average were working more years than female ones (p<0.01) and were more experienced (p<0 .02). Male directors consumed more time than female for figurehead (p<0.03) and leadership activities (p<0.05), while female directors consumed more time for maintenance/routine activities (p<0.03). No significant differences were observed to other managerial activities such as coordination, evaluation, policymaking, conflict resolution and public relations. These preliminary results showed that the health and fitness clubs of Athens municipality are administered by physical education bachelor holders. Further research is needed to examine and compare the qualifications of the directors of all health and fitness clubs of Youth and Sport organizations in Greece.
