Some remarks on the title of despotes in the era of the Komnenoi and the Angeloi
Author:
Abstract:
In this article we examine the information about the hierarchical position of the title of despotes in the era of the Komnenoi and the Angeloi and especially a significant passage from a document of the monastery of Xerochoraphiou - Hiera near Sampson (ancient Priene) regarding despotes Alexios - Bela, the Hungarian son-in-law of Emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1143-1180), who was the first possessor of this title since 1163.We reject the point of view of P. Wirth that the title of despotes was connected to the title of basileus. The new honorific title was created by Emperor Manuel under specific circumstances regarding the succession of the Byzantine throne. The same conditions were also in force some years later during the reign of Alexios III Angelos (1195-1203), when his two sons-in- law Alexios Palaiologos and Theodoros I Lascaris (1204-1222) held the title of despotes
