Abstract:
This paper presents the findings from an error analysis on the oral and written production of verbal aspect in Greek as L2. The data come from forty 3rd and 4 th level L2 learners of Greek. The verbs analyzed consist of (a) forms referring to past and future, and (b) na-complement clauses. The findings showed that even the 4th level learners experienced difficulties in the use of the verbal aspect. Both groups overgeneralized the perfective aspectual form in imperfective contexts and these overgeneralizations occurred more often in imperfective contexts with habitual reading and in complement clauses. It is suggested that the function of aspect should be brought on focus, so that the learners become aware of the features of perfective and imperfective aspect and use discourse-level information in order to choose the correct form.
