Disputes among the Athonite monasteries were normally concerned with boundaries. Litigants resorted to an arbitrational solution to their cases before the Holy Assembly at Karyes, which comprised the Protos and the abbots of the monasteries. Suits were presented orally and it was generally requested that the matter be conducted after personal inspection. This inspection was undertaken by the Holy Assembly as a body and in the presence of both litigants who, in the course of the procedure, produced documents and witnesses. Once a verdict had been reached, boundaries were drawn up by means of key sites and other notifications. Moreover, if the matter were pressing, immediate measures were ratified. Finally, a clean copy was produced which was signed by the entire Assembly. The decisions were made public and served either to the beneficiaries or to all of the parties. Here we may note that the Athonites frequently brought their disputes also before the civil (= Turkish) courts, an action which at the very least was uncanonical.
