The megas doux was the supreme commander of the byzantine warfleet. The office of megas doux was created by Alexios I Komnenos possibly in 1092. The first megas doux was probably John Doukas, Alexios Ts brother-in-law. In the 12th c. the megas doux besides the naval command of Βασιλικόν πλώιμον, he undertook the government of Hellas-Peloponnesos, Chyprus and Aegean islands as «πραίτωρ» or «ανθύπατος». The office of megas doux was directly related to the existence of naval forces in Byzantium. Whenever these forces did not exist, as during the reign of Andronikos II (1282-1328), then the title became hononary. After the middle of 14th c. until the end of life of the Byzantine Empire the title remained a highly honorary one.
