Theodore Skoutariotes (c. 1230-c. 1305 ?) became metropolitan of northwestern Anatolian Kyzikos between c. 1261/ 1274/ 1277 and c. 1282/ 1284, having supported Michael VIII Palaiologos ’ pro-unionist policy, but eventually lost his see by Michael VIII’s anti-unionist successor, Andronikos II Palaiologos. Probably after 1282 he composed a world Synopsis chronike (Compiled chronicle) covering the period from the creation of the world (traditionally dated to 5508 B.C. in Byzantium) till A.D. 1261, relying heavily for the post-1118 period to John Kinnamos, Niketas Choniates and George Akropolites. Although usually considered a lesser source, Skoutariotes’ work provides some important addenda (especially to his contemporary Akropolites) which could render it an important primary source of independent merit.
