George Kedrenos, the undervalued Byzantine chronicler. A bibliographical note : a bibliographical note

Kedrenos (2nd part of 1 lth-early 12th century) should not only be considered as simply useful for having preserved the Synopsis historion of John Skylitzes in his own compendium (in the second section of it, for the years A.D. 811-1057: see Bonn/ CSHB edition, vol. II [1839], p. 43 onwards); in fact, Kedrenos’ work, put together most probably between post A.D. 1071 and the early 12th century, contains a wealth of information for the pre-811 period (i.e. in more than half of the text: see Bonn ed., vols I [1838] and II [1839], p. 1-43), beginning with the creation of the world and a historical survey of the ancient peoples of the East, and moving on to the Roman and Byzantine Empires with important details (like those, for example, on the early Byzantine Pontos), corroborated by his historiographical/ chronographical predecessors whom he was able to use thoroughly -not simply copying them. Thus, Kedrenos ought not to be undervalued as a tedious or (in the post-81 1 case) superfluous source, since certain detected differences with the original Synopsis of Skylitzes help philologists in tracing valuable points regarding manuscript development. Had his work been redundant, a new critical edition of it (announced by R. Maisano in the Series Italica of the Corpus Fontium Historiae Byzantinae) would not have been undertaken.
