Structural change in farming : an application of Markov-chain analysis

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to search the ability of Markovian analysis to predict the future size distribution of the farms in an area of the Country of Fthiotis. The analysis suggests that: 1) the system is suitable for the method to be applied, 2) the improvement of farm structure in the area is very low, 3) the number of farms below 50 stremmas will constantly decrease in favour of farms between 50 and 100 stremmas in five years time, while in the long-term (10 years) the number of farms between 100 and 150 stremmas will increase.
