Abstract:
This study analyses the lexico-grammatical patterns favοred by Greek writers and speakers in the use of the shell noun "γεγονός''. The material discussed is derived from the corpus of Greek Texts (c.G.T.), which consists of written (academic, jοurnalistic) and oral (news, interviews, parliament speeches) texts. "Γεγoνός" as a shell noun appears in high frequencies in our data and is preferably used in the written texts. Ιt is also argued that coΙ- locations and pattems of this noun play a crucial role in genres and cοncur with generic purpose. Special attention is devοted to the functions and sub-functions (ideational, textual and interpersonal: informative, evaluative, argumentative) which these patterns fuΙfill.
