In this paper we study the function of theme of the initial utterance in TV news. We maintain that the strategy of chosen lead (according to the writer's style and the importance of the news item) and of chosen theme has as a target either the involvement of the audience or its rapid orientation to the upcoming information, in order to capture its attention and to show the change of subject.
