Abstract:
Australia is the only country in the world with a national policy on languages other than its dominant language. The Greek language is included amongst the three most widely used languages in Australia. It demonstrates a robust base of users (estimated to 340.000), maintains a high degree of acceptability, it possesses a strong elaboration of function and remains stable. Currently the Greek language is used as a medium of communication by the Greek-born settlers as well as a symbol of cultural identity by their children. Australian Greek community demonstrates the highest ethno-linguistic vitality amongst all ethnotic groups. During the last one hundred years of Greek settlement, it appears that a sub-standard variety of Greek was formed and arguably is being used by all settlers and their children. The language maintenance efforts will be defined by the rate of inter-ethnic marriages, the Government policies and the impact of the community network could exert socially, linguistically and psychologically.
