Despite extensive research on politeness phenomena, studies concerning written discourse are limited. Surprisingly, a systematic analysis of the expression of gratitude is absent. This paper examines thanking in one genre of scientific written discourse: prefaces of books and dissertations. It appears that a thanking act consists of four parts (introduction, illocutionary verb, the recipient and the cause of thanking) and its lexicogrammatical realizations (determined by situational parameters: social distance, degree of familiarity and degree of indebtness) reflect positive politeness norms. The results indicate that thanking is a face -boosting (FBA), rather than a face- threatening act (FTA), which satisfies the face wants of the participants.
