In this paper we present the automatic grouping oi Modern Greek verbs related tomotion using their definitions by a system of computer programs written in theprogramming language Prolog A set of 486 verb entries related to motion were used asinput to a system that produced groups of them on the basis of chains of theirdefinitions The verb at the end oi a chain was used as the criterion of verb groupingPrior to using these chains it was necessary to eliminate the cyclic parts of thedefinition chains which were also automatically detected by the system The results ofautomatic grouping were compared with groupings in Greek, German and Englishlanguage that were done manually by other authors Satisfactory agreement was foundbetween our results and the grouping found in the Antilexicon of Th Vostantzoglou,which is a manually compiled work for Modern Greek Some general agreement wasalso found with the german and english groupings considered
